Washing Your Kasavu Saree
Cotton Kasavu
Cotton Kasavu can be gently hand-washed in cold water with a mild detergent. Follow these steps:
- Soak the saree in cold water for no more than 10 minutes.
- Gently agitate — do not scrub or wring the fabric.
- Rinse thoroughly in cold water until the water runs clear.
- Do not twist to remove water. Instead, press the fabric gently against the side of the basin.
- Dry in shade — never in direct sunlight, which can fade the fabric and weaken the zari.
Tip: For the first wash, soak the saree in cold water with a tablespoon of salt to set the colour and protect the zari.
Tissue Kasavu
Tissue Kasavu — with its silk or polyester warp and delicate zari — is best dry cleaned. If you must wash at home:
- Use cold water only and a very mild detergent formulated for delicates.
- Do not soak for more than 5 minutes.
- Handle with extreme care — tissue fabric can snag easily.
- Dry flat in shade, never on a hanger (which can distort the fabric).
For your most precious tissue Kasavu sarees — like the Ponnambal or Suvarna — we strongly recommend professional dry cleaning after every 2–3 wears.
Protecting the Zari Border
The golden zari border is the soul of a Kasavu saree. It is also the most vulnerable part. To protect it:
- Never iron directly on the zari. Always iron on the reverse side, or use a pressing cloth between the iron and the border.
- Use a low-heat iron for cotton Kasavu and a cool iron for tissue Kasavu.
- Avoid contact with perfume and deodorant — chemicals in these products can tarnish zari over time. Apply fragrance before wearing, not after.
- Do not fold the saree along the zari border repeatedly in the same place, as this can crack the gold thread.
Storing Your Kasavu Saree
Proper storage is as important as proper washing. Follow these guidelines:
- Wrap in muslin cloth (not plastic) to allow the fabric to breathe. Plastic traps moisture and can cause mildew.
- Refold periodically. Every few months, refold your saree along different lines to prevent permanent crease marks.
- Store with neem leaves or cedar blocks to deter insects naturally, without the chemical damage of mothballs.
- Keep away from direct light — even indirect sunlight over time can fade the cream fabric.
- Do not store in a damp cupboard. Kerala’s humidity can be a saree’s enemy. Ensure your storage space is dry and well-ventilated.
After a Festive Occasion
After wearing your Kasavu saree for Onam, Vishu, or a wedding, air it out before folding and storing. Hang it in a shaded, ventilated space for a few hours to release any moisture from body heat. Do not store a saree that has been worn without airing it first.
